Will there be a lack of lorries this Christmas?

  • General News
  • 28th April 2017

With the countdown to Christmas rapidly ticking away it could be bad news for festive shoppers due to a shortage of lorry drivers.

We’ve all had those butterflies in our stomach after spotting the Coca-Cola lorry on the roads but that could become a distant memory, as the Haulage industry is in desperate need of new drivers.

Richard Burnett Chief Executive of The Road Haulage Association stated: “The situation is getting worse. Thousands of older drivers are leaving the industry and younger people can’t afford the £3,000 it costs to get a truck licence.”*

The organisation added that around 85% of everything bought in the UK is carried by a truck at some stage in the supply chain; meaning it could be an unhappy Christmas for many.

So, next time you’re paying for those jeans or game you’ve had your eye on the last few weeks take a moment to think how it made it onto the shelves. You may be waiting a little longer next time…

If you’re thinking about a career in: logistics, transport or supply chain, why not take a look at what we have to offer?
